#PF01 CH&S Trade Gun

All Indian trade guns with the serpent side-plate are rare.  Trade guns made in the United States are much rarer than their British counterparts.  This is one of those rare American guns. This gun comes from the collection of Ernie Cowles.  Cowles, a well-known artifact collector, specialized in Indian trade guns and assembled a collection that numbered 42 at one time.  He collected these rare guns from the 1940s until his death half a century later. This American gun was manufactured by Cronin, Herxthal and Sears about 1855.

Describing the gun, Cowles said, “Northwest gun with 31 inch barrel that has probably been shortened.  Large trigger guard.  Dragon side plate, ect.  Altered to percussion.  Lock marked in two lines ‘CH&S NY.’  Proofs on barrel are worn.   Only ‘AV’ is plain.  No fox markings.  Brass tacks in stock.  Butt place worn through and a piece is missing.  Three screws in butt.  Two rawhide bands around forestock.  They are sinew sewn but may not be very old.” (That was 50 years or so ago now and would have been 50 years old then)

Indian trade guns produced in the United States are seldom available.  This is an opportunity to own one.   $7750

#PF04 Rare Graded Northwest Company Token

Rarely does an artifact come to symbolize a great historical change.  When 5,000 North West Tokens were minted in 1820 the Columbia River fur trade was controlled by the North West Company.  In the Midwest competition with the Hudson Bay Company was so keen that employees of the two companies actually fought each other.  To end the violence, parliament forced the merger of the two companies in 1821.  By the time the North West Tokens arrived at Fort George in Astoria, the North West Company employees were now Hudson Bay employees.

Only a small percentage of the tokens have survived the last 180 years.  Nearly all have been in the ground, and the vast majority of the 200 or so that survive are heavily pitted and corroded.  Unburied tokens and those that are lightly corroded are rare even among North West tokens.  In terms of condition, details, and appearance, this is one of the nicer tokens that have survived.  It has been certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service as Fine 12.  Tokens like this are seldom available.  Sold, Enjoy!
